DAY 13 - DEVIL'S TOWER, WY

JUNE 29, 30, 2012

We had a quiet day on Friday the 29th.  The mission that day was to move from Hermosa, SD to Sturgis, SD, a distance of only fifty miles.  The one photo I took was of The Madonna of the Prairie which was ten miles north of our HEARTLAND RV PARK along Interstate 79N, near Hermosa.

Once we arrived at the NO NAME CITY RV Resort, we settled in and spent some time getting acquainted with the neighbors on either side of us.  We delayed the task of looking for a grocery store, and made an amazing meal with what we had in stock.  I enjoy being creative, and am so thankful Russ goes along with my "Recycling" experiments.  I weighed and measured the Shrimp from our freezer, and the rice left over from an earlier meal.  Then weighed and measured  leftover spaghetti sauce that had zucchini to thicken it.  It reminded me of my Mom's Spanish Rice which had been a family favorite back in the 1950's.

Saturday, June 30th was our 13th day on the road.  We chose to drive to
DEVIL'S TOWER in Wyoming, a distance of 91 miles, via Interstate 90 West,
to Exit 199, where we got off to go to the WYOMING Visitor's Center
We also drove down the road to learn more about the Vore Buffalo Jump
It was a place that wanted $5 each donation to see an excavation pit where Buffalo
remains had been uncovered when they were building a section of Interstate 90.
The story is that before the Indians had rifles, they drove the Buffalo to a point where
they ran them off a cliff to kill the.  That form of hunting was discontinued in the 1800's
after rifles became part of their hunting tools.  We preferred to save ourselves the $10,
and turned around and took Wyoming Route 111, and Wyoming 24 through Hulett to
Devil's Tower.  Our first view of Devil's Tower was from 17 miles away.

Here are a few more up-close pictures of Devil's Tower, as well as "Teddy Roosevelt"
character who gave a fascinating rendition of the President, during  his
15 minute presentation.   He was really into his character and portrayed a very
strong personality with a commitment to the American people.

We learned that the BLACK HILLS get their name from the dense Ponderosa pines
at the peaks of the mountains, appearing black from a distance.

On our way back from Devil's Tower, we stopped in Deadwood, SD,  to attend the 5:30 PM Mass.  The town is a National Historic Landmark, and lined with Casinos and 1876 period buildings.  We had our dinner at the Buffalo Steakhouse, almost across from the place where Wild Bill Hickok was  shot to death, when he made the mistake of having his back to the door while playing cards.  He had a reputation of having 37 notches on his gun for each person he had killed.  He had only been in Deadwood for four months where he was the Sheriff.

It is interesting, some of the buildings remind me of those in our home town with the interesting facades and one home with the rounded silo corner to a building.

Time to be on the road again.  Today we plan to visit The National Cemetery just around the
corner from our RV Park, and Sturgis, SD, famous for the Motorcycle Rally in August.  This place seems to attract bikers because of all the wonderful curvy roads for them to enjoy.  Harleys seem to be the only brand anyone uses out here.  We saw them in the store windows in Deadwood, too.  This one was one I photographed at Crazy Horse Mountain on June 26th.
