OCTOBER 6 and 7 - TAOS, NEW MEXICO

SATURDAY
OCTOBER 6, 2012

Although we have never been in Mexico, I can imagine
it might be like Taos, in that all the street names
are in Spanish.  Many restaurants and businesses
have Spanish names too.  Both Russ and I said
that if we were to live here, we would feel the
desire to learn Spanish for self preservation.
That applies especially when ordering
from a menu.

As we drove into Taos our progress was slow.
The roads were crowded with folks heading
to the WOOL FESTIVAL and the
ARTS AND CRAFTS FESTIVAL.
Parking was available with a great deal
of searching and patience.
We walked several blocks back to the main street
and Kit Carson Park where the WOOL FESTIVAL
was being held.  We had no idea what to
expect, but it was something to do.

Colorful skeins of Yarn were on display
in the first few  booths.

Then I spotted slippers and really got excited.
I had been thinking about a new pair of slippers
all summer.  The woman who had made
the slippers offered for me to try them on,
and I found the perfect pair, plus a clever
bottle caddy made with her scraps.

You can see more of her products at:

Other vendors were selling lunch with the
opportunity to have Lamb Stew; lovely salads
with Lamb, and Lamb Chili.  It was too early for lunch
and the lines were long.  So we continued walking around
the Park and stopped to enjoy these beautiful animals.

PYGORA GOATS

LLAMAS

from Rio Fernando Farms
in Taos, NM.

As we walked further around town,
I was struck by the simplicity and beauty
of the First Baptist Church on the Main Street.

We stopped by several restaurants to check their
menus, before chosing
THE GORGE BAR AND GRILL
We really enjoyed their
Green Chili Cheeseburger and Sweet Potato fries.
As Russ said, "This place is a keeper."
We would definitely return there.
Excellent service
on a very busy day in town.

There were some interesting Shops in the lower level,
which we browsed through after lunch.

We rounded out our day by attending 5 PM Mass
at SAN FRANCISCO de ASIS CHURCH.
(See our October 5th posting for photos).
The Mass parts were in English,
and all of the music was sung in Spanish.

On the way to Mass, we passed this
road side Memorial.
This one begged to be remembered
with three crosses for three young people.

Sad to say, we saw 15 such road side memorials
in the distance of 81 miles between
 Taos and Santa Fe.
The speed limit along that highway
was 75 miles per hour.
A pretty somber reality that perhaps SPEED KILLS.

SUNDAY
OCTOBER 7, 2012

Can you believe we were several miles from our RV,
when I realized that I had forgotten my camera!
I felt like I had left my eyes home.
We drove fifteen miles to see
the Rio Grande River GORGE BRIDGE.
To the locals, we had asked,
this was one of the "Must Sees".
After the beauty of the Grand Canyon
and the Colorado River,
this was not as spectacular to us.
Russ did take a little footage on
his Camcorder to prove we had been there,
but from the bridge,
the river did not look that wide.
There were a few rapids, and the water
appeared a clear green.
This was a loop type of drive,
with the remaining part of the Loop
being 69 miles.  We opted to backtrack
the 15 miles we had driven, and
returned to the RV after
grocery shopping at SMITH's.
We topped off our gas there too,
for $3.50 per gallon.
